apartment research

Priorities in an Apartment:
-No further from campus than I am now (Patchen Place is a little iffy at New Circle/Richmond Rd)
-<$600 a month in rent
-Washer/dryer IN UNIT
-Extra storage
-Dogs of all sizes allowed (breed restrictions ok)
-Dishwasher. Non-negotiable.

without washer/dryer in unit:

*the meadows: student discount, dog park, ducks.
1 br, 675 sq ft, $530

*raintree (looked at this one before): excellent indoor pool, "pet friendly," "washer and dryer available" (does that mean you can rent them?)
1 br, 680 sq ft, $550-595

lansdowne apartments: water, sewer, trash (yeah, these look kinda sketchy)
1 br, 636 sq ft, $424-500

*creeks on kirklevington: student discount, newly renovated, water, sewer, trash; free wifi, cool balcony
1 br, 720 sq ft, $579

washer and dryer in unit:
saddlebook: water, sewer, trash; fireplace; BUT steep hill
1 br; ? sq ft, $600

old farm: fireplace, large dogs permitted, dog park; POTHOLES in parking lot
1 br, 708 sq ft, $539-579

*patchen place: pets allowed, water, sewer, trash & gas, fireplace
1 br, 750 sq ft, $559

spring house on the park: 2 pets per home, fireplace, dog run
1 br, 676 sq ft, $569-599

*the mansion: $200 one time/ $20/month pet deposit; fireplace; sunroom instead of balcony, fireplace
1 br, 624 sq ft, $575

I think the Creeks sounds awesome, too, but I'd go with your gut when touring one. Pick the one that feels the most like home.

I would lean toward Patchen Place myself. Seems like you want a dog, and they do have a pet policy...but also:
1. You will appreciate that washer/dryer in unit, most likely, unless it's weirdly priced in comparison to a laundromat, or the laundromat is REALLY close by.
2. Having gas included is a HUGE bonus and it's actually cheaper for more space (is this place in a bad neighborhood or is it just kind of awesome?). Gas can really add up (maaybe moreso here but for that matter, you guys have had basically as cold a winter as we have - and it might power the fireplace too depending on the unit) and if you can get a good deal on internet it's a better throw-in than the free wifi.

A lot of these sound good, though. You want to feel comfortable, not have the best amenities, so take a look around and try to envision all your stuff and where it will go. Sometimes it's the kitchen that will make or break a place. ...Or the doorhandles.

The best decision we made about our apartment, randomly? Was to not get cable. We stream everything off of Hulu or SideReel or the network website: we don't accidentally fall into anything, but/and we also don't waste time on TV we don't really want to watch; we don't get overly marketed to; we can't watch sports games or awards shows BUT there are almost always bars, clubs, and community centers with TVs showing those kind of things.
