i found the fairy tales i wrote for my fairy tale fictions class at the end of last year at hanover. this is one of my revisionist fairy tales.
Once upon a time there lived a beautiful little princess. This princess had a big wolfhound who she loved more than anything, and the wolfhound was a very faithful companion and followed the little princess wherever she went. One day, the little princess decided she wanted to have an adventure, and so she set out with her wolfhound. They had not ventured far beyond the castle when they encountered a fairy.
“Hello,” said the fairy. “Where are you off to?”
“We’re on an adventure,” said the little princess.
“You are? Where to?”
“I don’t know, that’s why it’s an adventure!”
“How would you like to find your heart’s desire?”
“Sure, that sounds like fun.”
The fairy drew herself up and lowered her voice so that it sounded much more impressive that it would have otherwise. “In order to find your heart’s desire, you must do these seven things:
“First, you must bring me an apple from the tree of life on the other side of the world.
“Second, you must bring me a square of gingerbread from the candy house that is deep in the wood.
“Third, you must bring me a ruby bracelet that has been tossed into the sea by an impetuous princess.
“Fourth, you must bring me rapunzel that grows in the witch’s garden.
“Fifth, you must bring me a pair of solid glass slippers, size 6, please.
“Sixth, you must bring me the largest diamond in the world, birthed by a very greedy woman.
“Seventh, you must make me a shirt using only fibers from saguaro cacti.”
The little princess was amazed at how hard it would be to find her heart’s desire; she was just a little princess, after all, and the things the fairy described seemed very, very difficult. Her belly was growling, too; they’d left the castle just before supper time, and she and the wolfhound hadn’t thought to bring any food with them on their adventure. Her dog looked up at her and whined.
“Well?” said the fairy. “Get to it!”
“Fuck this shit,” said the little princess. “Come on,” she said to her dog. “Let’s go home and get some supper.”
And so the little princess and her faithful wolfhound left the fairy and her seven demands where they were and went back to the castle. There, they had an amazing dinner of salads, meats, cheeses, and desserts, followed by a bedtime story read to them by her father the king, and finally came bedtime in the most luxuriously soft featherbeds, one for each of them in the princess’s room. The little princess and her dog were quite happy to remain in the castle and leave the questing to others, and so they lived happily together for a very, very long time.
